Keegin Harrison Schoppert Smith & Karner LLP has served the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 40 years. Its first offices were in the historic Albert Building at 4th and B Streets in San Rafael, California. In 1971, the firm moved one block east to its present location at 1000 4th Street, the site of the old Marin County Courthouse.

Since its inception, the firm has been known for its real estate and commercial litigation practice, representing individuals, businesses and non-profit entities at the trial and appellate levels of all California and federal courts. Notable matters include the successful representation of Marin General Hospital in its defense of the lawsuit brought by the Marin Healthcare District to nullify the long-term lease under which the hospital operates. In another recent case, the firm won an injunction against the City of San Anselmo in favor of a landowner whose undeveloped property was threatened by landslides caused by water runoff from uphill streets. The firm’s litigation attorneys have particular expertise in alternative dispute resolution, and have a long record of concluding disputes promptly and cost-efficiently.

The growth of the firm’s land use practice has paralleled the development of Marin County. In the 1960s and 1970s, the firm was involved in many of the major developments that still can be seen along Highway 101, such as the office complex in Novato that was once the national headquarters of Fireman’s Fund Insurance. As the focus of development in the County has shifted to smaller projects, the firm has continued to guide homeowners, developers, and neighboring landowners through the regulatory and approval process, and its attorneys routinely appear on land use matters before planning commissions, city councils and other regulatory bodies throughout Northern California.

Since the 1980s, the firm has distinguished itself as the premier Marin County law firm for sophisticated and complex business counseling in the areas of corporate, partnership and limited liability entity formation and governance, as well as intellectual property, securities law and mergers & acquisitions. This transactional expertise extends to real estate transactions, including the negotiation and drafting of purchase and sale agreements, leases and financings.

The firm also offers a full range of estate planning and family wealth transfer services, including advice on gift and estate taxes, preparation of wills, trusts and similar instruments, and related estate and trust administration services.

What has characterized Keegin Harrison Schoppert & Smith LLP throughout its history is the combination of the quality of its lawyers coupled with its institutional dedication to the highest standards of client service. While its attorneys each have developed an expertise in a specific area of law, they routinely share ideas and collaborate on client matters. The result is that clients have the benefit of a range of expertise typically found only at large, big-city firms, but with the personal attention of a small-town practice.
